Also, I've had a professor spread misconceptions about open source software (i.e. What do I mean by "against"? I'm talking about things like only teaching MS stuff, or talking negatively about Linux (or other pieces of open source software) (example: had a professor start talking negatively about Apache when I'm pretty sure she has never touched it in her life). Sure, it will be nice to have the degree to show prospective employers and to move into higher paying management positions, but in terms of learning IT.bleh!Īnd to get to my point: It seems like everyone in the IT department at my university is either ignorant of Linux or outright "against" (for lack of a better term) Linux. Anyway, I'm just about to finish up, and I have to say that I feel like this has been a huge waste of time. A couple years ago I decided to go back to school to get a management of Information Systems degree. I'm working off personal experience here in thinking that academia is extremely out of touch when it comes to IT education, which is why I'm posting this to get a wider range of opinions.Ī little background: I have over 10 years of real world IT experience (MS and Linux).
